At the end of September, a friend of mine asked me to knit a beannie for her little boy borned at the end onf 2017 (for whom I made a baby sleeping bag, a bear coat and a little soft blanket). She chose the colour, but I had carte blanche for design.

The little boy celebrate his 1st anniversary this week and for his beannie, I wanted to knit it with English mock rib stitch. I never knit this stitch before and yet, I love this pattern has ribs are really highlighted thanks to a special relief that I really like. Moreover, this stitch is very stretchy.

For the design, 1 wanted to add a lapel to keep ears in the warm thanks to this double thickness, but sometomes it annoying me because it doesn’t stay still. Fros this beannie, I decided to use a technique shown on my new book dedicated to Circulare knitting : sew a lapel while knitting. The lapel is turned to wrong side and is stitched while knitting.

I start with stocking stitch (that ends on the wrong side) in round and than I resume with English moch rib stitch.

So, how do we knit English mock rib stitch?

In Flat knitting, the pattern is composed by a multiple of 4 + 3 stitches:

Row 1: knit 3, *purl 1, knit 3*. Repeat from * to * up to the end of the row.
Row 2: knit 1, *purl 1, knit 3*. Repeat from * to * up to 2 stitches before the end of the row and finish with purl 1, knit 1.

Repeat rows 1 and 2.

In circulare knitting, the pattern is composed by a multiple of 4 stitches:

Round 1 : *knit 3, purl 1*. Repeat from * to * up to the end of the round.
Round 2 : *purl 1, knit 1, purl 2*. Repeat from * to * up to the end of the round.

Repeat rounds 1 and 2.

When I get to the wanted height, I pick up stitches from round 1 (th same number when I cast on) to knit together the picked un ones and the on-going ones. When the lapel is done, I keep up knit the English mock rib stitch.

Before closing the beannie, I evenly spaced some decreasing to change English mock rib stitch into 1/1 ribs. Then, I knit 2 stitches together up to the end of the row. And it’s done!

What do you think of this beannie?

This beannie is knitted with Drops Baby Merinos, Turquoise (uni colour 32)
